Why Choose the Austin Air Bedroom Machine?
When it comes to nighttime air purification, the Bedroom Machine sets the gold standard. It’s the only unit in the Austin Air lineup with both medical-grade HEPA and our unique military-grade HEGA carbon cloth, originally developed for chemical warfare protection. This dual-defense technology doesn’t just trap particles—it neutralizes the gases, chemicals, and pathogens that regular HEPA filters leave behind.
Backed by a clinical study from Johns Hopkins, the Bedroom Machine is the ideal choice for anyone struggling with chemical sensitivities, allergies, or poor sleep quality due to air pollution. Whether you live in a city apartment, a new construction home, or are simply looking to create a sanctuary for healing, this purifier delivers hospital-grade air purification at home.
Real Research. Real Results.
Independent studies show how Austin Air purifiers reduce respiratory symptoms, flareups, and ER visits, as well as lower indoor air pollution and even help regulate blood pressure.
The NO₂ Study
In this study, researchers worked with Johns Hopkins University to see if air purifiers could reduce indoor nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)—a harmful gas from gas stoves and heaters that can trigger coughing, wheezing, and breathing problems, especially in people with COPD or asthma.
What they did:
- They chose homes that had unvented gas appliances—like stoves or heaters—which produce NO₂.
- Participants were split into three groups: one group had their gas stoves replaced with electric ones, another used ventilation hoods, and the third group used two Bedroom Machine purifiers (in the kitchen and bedroom) while keeping their gas appliances.
- Researchers measured NO₂ levels before changes, one week later, and again after three months.
What they found:
- Homes that replaced gas stoves had major drops in NO₂—no surprise.
- But the homes using Bedroom Machines saw NO₂ drop by 23% in bedrooms and 27% in kitchens within just one week—and levels stayed low for months.
- Surprisingly, using only ventilation hoods did not significantly reduce NO₂.
Why it matters:
- For people who can’t remove gas appliances (like renters), the Bedroom Machine offers a proven way to reduce indoor NO₂ and improve air quality.
- Cleaner air means fewer respiratory symptoms like coughing and chest tightness.
- This study shows that using Bedroom Machine air purifiers at home can be almost as effective as removing gas sources altogether.
In simple terms:Running two Bedroom Machine purifiers in homes with gas stoves cut dangerous NO₂ levels by nearly a quarter in bedrooms and kitchen—helping people breathe easier and reduce exposure to indoor pollution.
The Pregnant Women & Infants Study
Researchers partnered with Johns Hopkins University and the Baltimore City Health Department to test whether placing Austin Air Bedroom Machines in homes with pregnant women or babies and smokers could improve indoor air quality.
What They Did:
- Recruited 50 pregnant women or new mothers, most living in low-income, urban households. Every home had at least one smoker.
- Teams installed two Bedroom Machine purifiers per home—one in the living room and one in the mother’s or infant’s bedroom.
- Participants also received education about the dangers of secondhand smoke (SHS).
- Researchers measured air quality (PM₂.₅), indoor nicotine levels, and salivary cotinine (a marker for smoke exposure) before and after four weeks of purifier use.
What They Found:
- Fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) in the air dropped significantly—meaning there was much less dust, smoke particles, and combustion pollutants.
- For non-smoking women, salivary cotinine levels (a sign of smoke exposure) dropped significantly, showing they experienced less secondhand smoke exposure indoors.
- Although nicotine levels in the air didn’t drop significantly, most participants (70%) reported that smokers started avoiding smoking indoors.
- Satisfaction was high—91% were happy with the intervention, and 98% would recommend air purifiers to others.
Why This Matters:
- Air purifiers are not a substitute for smoking bans, but they offer a powerful way to lower indoor pollution and protect non-smokers, especially pregnant women and infants.
- Reducing PM₂.₅ and smoke exposure indoors may help prevent respiratory issues and boost early childhood health.
- The high satisfaction rates suggest that portable air purification is a feasible and well-received intervention in vulnerable communities.
In simple terms: Installing Bedroom Machines in homes where someone smokes helped clean the air by reducing fine particles and smoke exposure. Pregnant women and infants in these households breathed cleaner air and felt the benefit almost immediately.
The Clean Air Heart Ancillary Study
Researchers studied whether the Austin Air Bedroom Machine could help people who used to smoke and now have moderate to severe COPD (a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe).
How the study worked:
- 116 participants who were former smokers with COPD received either a real air purifier or a fake (sham) one that looked the same but didn't filter.
- They used the machine for 6 months, and researchers checked how it affected their breathing problems, rescue inhaler use, and walking ability.
- They also tracked symptoms using special questionnaires and tests.
What they found:
- People using the Bedroom Machine reported fewer respiratory symptoms—like less coughing and less shortness of breath.
- Bedroom Machine users had fewer moderate COPD flare-ups and used their rescue inhalers about half as much compared to the fake-filter group.
- Among folks who used the purifier more than 80% of the time, they walked farther in exercise tests and saw stronger improvements in their symptom scores.
Why it's important:
- This study shows that using a high-performance air purifier can really help improve breathing and reduce flare-ups in people with COPD—especially if they spend lots of time indoors.
- It was the first randomized trial to show health benefits from portable air cleaners in this kind of lung disease.
In simple terms:
For people with COPD (often former smokers), running a good air purifier daily helped them breathe easier, reduced coughing, cut down on emergency inhaler use, and lowered the risk of flare-ups—especially when they used it consistently.

How does it work?
The Bedroom Machine® addresses the broadest spectrum of air cleaning by removing sub-micron particles including allergens and asthma irritants, noxious gases, odors and chemicals. Austin Air’s 360-degree intake system draws air into all sides of the Bedroom Machine®, passing it through a comprehensive 5 stages of filtration.
The filter has a true medical grade HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filter surrounded by a blend of carbon and zeolite. It also uses a military-grade high efficiency gas adsorption (HEGA) filter as well.
The HEGA cloth in the Austin Air Bedroom Machine® was initially developed by the British Armed Forces in the 1970s as protection against chemical and gas warfare. It was initially used - and still is to this day - as a protective layer in military clothing and masks to protect against chemical, biological, radioactive, and nuclear (CBRN) agents. A single gram of HEGA cloth has a surface area equivalent to half the size of a football field. Currently, Austin Air is the ONLY air cleaner in the United States that makes a portable, home air purifier with a HEGA filter.
How long does the filter last?
Because this air purifier utilizes 60 sq. ft. of medical grade HEPA and up to 15 lbs of activated carbon and zeolite, the Austin Air Bedroom Machine® filter is designed to last five years under normal residential conditions.

What is the difference between the HealthMate and the Bedroom Machine?
The Austin Air Bedroom Machine has all the capabilities of the HealthMate, but it has an extra layer of filtration. The Bedroom Machine has a 5-stage filter compared to the 4 stage filter that is in the HealthMate. This extra stage in the Bedroom Machine is themilitary-grade high efficiency gas adsorption (HEGA) filter for added protection against chemicals, gases, and VOCs.That makes the Bedroom Machine the ultimate solution for the most vulnerable populations and the most contaminated environments.
Is this as good as a whole house air cleaner?
It’s even better! A "whole house air cleaner" is typically integrated into the home's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system, but portable air cleaners by Austin Air are the best air filters for home and here’s why:
- Cost-Effective: Austin Air cleaners are less expensive upfront compared to whole home systems. This makes them a more accessible option, in addition to being the best home air purifier.
- 24/7 Use: We recommend running our units 24/7 but no matter what you choose, you are in control unlike whole house systems which only work when the heating or cooling are active.
- Immediate Benefits: Austin Air filters in the house provide immediate relief from poor air quality in the specific area where they are used. They can start working right away to improve air quality and comfort.
- Customizable Coverage: You can choose different models and sizes of Austin Air cleaners – Standard, Junior, or the “it” personal air purifier – based on the specific needs of each room. This allows you to customize the level of air purification according to the room’s size and air quality requirements.
- Targeted Air Cleaning: Portable air cleaners can be placed in specific rooms or areas where air quality is a concern, allowing for more focused and effective cleaning of the air where it’s needed most.
- Flexibility and Portability: Portable units can be moved from room to room as needed, which is especially useful if different areas of your home have varying air quality issues or if you want to address different rooms at different times. For one example: this is a game changer for home cooks with kitchens that are prone to setting off the smoke alarm.
- Ease of Maintenance: Maintenance for portable Austin Air cleaners is simpler and less costly because filters last for five years. Filter replacements and cleaning can be done by the user, without the need for a professional.
- No Installation Required: Austin Air cleaners are plug-and-play, meaning you can start using them right away without professional installation, which saves time and money.
In other words: a portable air cleaner by Austin Air is the best air filter for home and work.
