COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) encompasses a range of respiratory diseases including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Often a result of smoking, COPD symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, a chronic cough, excess mucus, weight loss, frequent respiratory infections, lack of energy and swelling of the legs and feet. There is no cure for COPD. Often symptoms deteriorate over time, impacting a person’s quality of life.

According to the experts, what we eat can seriously affect the disease. Nutrition has an impact on lung function, so it makes sense we can improve COPD by watching our diet. For example certain nutrients have anti-inflammatory properties that may help to ease symptoms of COPD. Maintaining a healthy weight gives a person more energy and increased mobility. Being overweight however, puts excess strain on the heart and lungs making it more difficult to breathe.

COPD is currently America’s third biggest killer. It’s a chronic disease, with no known cure, so it’s promising to think that some symptoms can be managed with changes to our diet.
