The past year has put air quality in the spotlight like never before. We now know the main method of transmission for Covid-19 is airborne. Who and what we share the air with has never been more important. Which is why we’re proud to announce Austin Air Purifiers are now running in more than 100k classrooms across the US. But even before the arrival of Covid-19, we were on a mission to keep pollutants out of the classroom.

Our work in East Boston

Back in 2019, we started our work with the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, the East Boston Social Centers, AIRInc and Blue Cross Blue Shield, to help improve the quality of air for people living close to Logan International Airport in East Boston. As part of the project, we installed a number of air purifiers in classrooms and social centers across the East Boston area. You can read more about our partnership here.

Clean air in the classroom improves test scores

In another study, this time from a team at Brown University there is evidence to suggest that installing portable air purifiers in classrooms improves a child’s performance in the same way that it would if class sizes were reduced by a third.

Pollution before birth linked to asthma in babies

But it’s not just about protecting children in school that matters. Clean air, free from pollutants is essential, even before we are born.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that babies of mothers exposed to high levels of pollution when pregnant, were far more likely to develop asthma by their third birthday. The team focused on levels of UFP’s, the ultrafine particles from vehicles, that can pass through the lining of the lungs, into the bloodstream and from there into the placenta.

No level of smoke is safe

Another study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, found that even minimal levels of second-hand cigarette smoke can impact an unborn child. Findings suggest, smoke exposure causes genetic changes in an unborn baby, that may put them at risk of developmental diseases or cancer later in life. This is particularly alarming when we consider that around 25% of women have experienced some level of smoke exposure when pregnant.

We can help

The more we learn about air pollution, the more it becomes a priority. If you’re concerned about the quality of air at home, at work or at school, we can help you find a solution. Our air purifiers are clinically proven to improve air quality in homes where there is a smoker and will effectively remove the UFP’s that are linked to asthma in babies.
