Product description

The Austin Air Pet Machine Replacement Filter is engineered for homes with dogs, cats, birds, and other furry (or feathered) family members. This genuine replacement filter uses a specialized blend of impregnated carbon and zeolite.

While the HealthMate Plus also uses an impregnated carbon and zeolite, the Plus is designed for broader chemical sensitivities. The Pet Machine filter focuses on pet-specific air concerns — using more zeolite and a different (proprietary) impregnated carbon formula that’s optimized to adsorb ammonia-based smells and neutralize persistent pet odors at the source. And with 60 sq. ft. of medical-grade HEPA, it also captures 99.97% of airborne particles, such as dander, hair, allergens, and airborne bacteria.* This also helps protect the tiny respiratory systems of your pets!

Why Choose the Pet Machine Replacement Filter?

While several Austin Air filters use carbon and zeolite, the Pet Machine provides a custom carbon blend that excels at removing ammonia-based odors. These are overlooked by general-purpose air purifiers but are commonly found in pet urine, bedding, and litter boxes. Combined with extra zeolite and high-efficiency HEPA filtration, this filter offers the perfect balance of particle capture and odor elimination for homes with pets. If your main concern is pet dander, smells, or allergy symptoms related to your furry family members, this is the best filter for the job.

Looking for Even More Protection?

Want to protect against viruses, VOCs, and chemical pollutants too? Consider upgrading to:

  • Bedroom Machine Filter – Adds a 5th layer of military grade HEGA for extra defense against gases and viruses
  • Immunity Machine Filter – Our most advanced option with 8-phase filtration, ideal for immune support and chemical sensitivities

All standard filters fit all standard Austin Air machines — so you can upgrade anytime without replacing your unit.

Real Research. Real Results.

Independent studies show how Austin Air purifiers reduce respiratory symptoms, flareups, and ER visits, as well as lower indoor air pollution and even help regulate blood pressure.

The Asthma Farming Study

In Washington’s Yakima Valley, a rural area with lots of farms, dairies, and crops, there is a lot of air pollution from dust, ammonia, pesticides, and traffic. Children who live there often get asthma because the air inside their homes can be full of tiny particles that make breathing difficult.

Researchers from the University of Washington worked with local clinics and farmworker families between 2015 and 2017. They set up a study with children aged 6–12 who had asthma. Every family got asthma education and tools like mattress covers and green cleaning kits. But only half the families also received HealthMate air purifiers to use in the child’s bedroom and the living room—running 24/7 to clean the air indoors.

Here’s what happened:

  • In homes without the HEPA purifiers, indoor pollution (PM2.5) dropped by about 15% in bedrooms and 17% in living rooms.
  • In contrast, homes with the HealthMate cleaners saw far bigger reductions—up to 65% less in bedrooms and 48% less in living rooms.
  • The cleaner air led to better asthma control: kids had fewer symptoms and were much less likely to need unplanned doctor or emergency visits—72% fewer visits overall, and an even stronger benefit for kids with more severe symptoms at the start.

Why This Study Matters

  • Most asthma studies focus on cities—but this one is special because it shows the HealthMate works even in agricultural, rural settings with high levels of dust and ammonia.
  • It shows that cleaning indoor air with a purifier really helps kids with asthma breathe easier and reduce emergency room visits.
  • It proves that the HealthMate can be a powerful part of asthma management—especially in homes where outdoor pollution seeps inside every day.

In simple terms: Kids in farm areas breathed cleaner indoor air, and because of that, their asthma was easier to manage—and their families didn’t have to go to the ER as often.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How do I know which filter size I need?

Check the label on your Austin Air unit — standard units begin with HM4 (like HM400), junior units start with HM2 (like HM200), and the personal "it" units are smaller and labeled accordingly. You can also measure your unit or use our “Help Me Choose” tool.

Are Austin Air filters interchangeable?

Yes — but only within the same size category.

All standard-size filters fit all standard-size purifiers. So you can upgrade your filter (for example, from a HealthMate to a Bedroom Machine filter) without replacing your unit. Junior and “it” models require their own unique filter sizes.

Do I need a new filter when I buy a new Austin Air purifier?

No — every Austin Air purifier comes with a filter already installed and ready to use. You only need to purchase a replacement when it's time for a change, usually every 5 years.

Can I upgrade my current unit with a different filter type?

Absolutely. If you own a standard-size unit, you can switch to any other standard-size filter type — like the Bedroom Machine or HealthMate Plus — at any time. It’s an easy way to customize your purifier based on your current air quality needs.

How long do Austin Air filters last?

5 years under normal use — which makes them one of the longest-lasting filters on the market. In high-pollution or pet-heavy environments, you may choose to replace them sooner.

Do filters include the prefilter?

Yes — all Austin Air replacement filters come with the main filter and integrated prefilter layers. You do not need to purchase the prefilter separately unless you’re just replacing that component.
