The Asthma Smoke Study
In a study led by researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics, scientists tested whether using HEPA air purifiers like the Austin Air HealthMate could help kids with asthma. They focused on children aged 6–12 who were exposed to secondhand smoke at home.
The study randomly gave 225 children with asthma either HealthMate air cleaners or sham (inactive) units, and monitored them in their homes over a year. Each household had one purifier in the main room and one in the child’s bedroom.
What did they find?
- Children with the real HealthMate air purifiers had fewer unplanned asthma visits to a doctor or emergency room—about 42 fewer visits over the year compared to the control group.
- Homes with active purifiers had fewer fine particles, compared to homes with inactive units.

By removing tiny particles from the air—like smoke, dust, and allergens—the HealthMate helped reduce asthma flare-ups in children, making fewer trips to the ER. Even though kids still experienced asthma symptoms, the reduced exposure to pollutants made a measurable difference in their need for emergency care.
The Blood Pressure Study
In a study by Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Boston, researchers looked at how using an Austin Air HealthMate purifier could improve the air in rooms and even lower people’s blood pressure.
What they did:
- Seventy-seven people who lived near Boston’s Logan Airport spent time in two kinds of rooms: one with an Austin Air purifier running, and one without.
- Scientists measured both the air quality and each person’s blood pressure while they were in those rooms.
What they found:
