Our research into the dangers associated with air pollution has uncovered some pretty dramatic findings over the years. But this latest study, from a team at the China Medical University in Taiwan, has to be up there as one of the most astonishing facts we have come across.

The research team looked at the health records of 40,000 people over a 12 year period and found that exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide increases our chances of developing age-related macular degeneration, by 91%. Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is the most common cause of visual impairment for people over 50 and although symptoms can be slowed down, there is no cure.

AMD affects vision in the center of the visual field. Sufferers may experience blurred or no vision in this area, making it impossible to read, drive or recognize faces. In fact, people with AMD have great difficulty carrying out the majority of day to day tasks.

There have been a number of studies showing that exposure to high levels of pollutants can affect the central nervous system. The retina, the part of the eye that is damaged by AMD, is connected to our central nervous system. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that our vision can be damaged in this way.

In recent years there have been countless studies to show that air pollution affects all aspects of our health. From premature birth and miscarriages at the beginning of life to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease later on. Air pollution has been linked to depression, diabetes, asthma, allergies, cancer, increased BMI, anxiety, heart disease and a whole lot more.

If you are worried about the affect air pollution is having on your health, take a moment to read about our range of air purifiers and what they can do to reduce pollutants in your home. Pollutants such as Nitrogen Dioxide, VOC’s, PM2.5, chemicals, allergens, dust, odors and mold.
