The figures associated with air pollution are literally mind blowing. The global cost of air pollution is around $5.11 TRILLION every year. In 2016 it was estimated that around 7 million people die prematurely every year as a result of the air they breathe. The impact of air pollution on the global population is huge and far reaching. And although the majority of us care deeply about today’s environmental problems, the task of us as individuals, actually making a difference often seems too big to tackle.

Change will only truly happen if issues are highlighted globally. Governments need to implement policies in order to reduce carbon emissions and other types of air pollution. However there are a few things we can do to protect ourselves.

If you can, leave your car at home. We are exposed to far more pollution when driving, than we are when walking.

When cycling, walking or running, try to avoid busy roads and stay well back from the edge of the curb, as this is where pollution levels are highest.

If you live in a city, try to spend as much time as possible in green, open spaces.

Keep an eye on pollution levels. There are numerous apps that help you keep track of pollution levels in your area. If it’s clear pollution levels are high, try to limit the time you spend outdoors.

The changes we talk about here are simple and fairly easy to follow most of the time. And they will significantly reduce your exposure to outdoor air pollutants. However, that’s only half the battle!! Indoor air is often far more toxic than the air outside. But that’s for another post!!
