There is a lot of information on poor indoor air quality and how it affects our health and the health of our families. But have you stopped to consider what poor indoor air quality could be doing to your pets?

Dogs have over 300 million receptors in their nose compared to the 6 million we have. This means a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 and 100,000 times more powerful than ours. To give you a sense of this, one dog expert explains, as humans we may be able to detect a teaspoon of sugar in our coffee. A dog could detect the same amount of sugar in a million gallons of water.

With this hypersensitivity to odors, it’s no surprise to discover that animals are just as vulnerable to pollutants in the home as we are.

In one study carried out by researchers in Mexico City, they found that dogs exposed to pollution experienced the same inflammation in the brain that is associated with the first signs of Alzheimer’s.

Birds are also very vulnerable to certain airborne pollutants. Nonstick coatings, such as those used on certain cookware, produce chemicals that can be fatal for birds, causing a condition known as ‘Polymer Fume Fever’.

In another study, cats were found to have dangerously high levels of flame retardant chemicals in their system. This could be explained as cats ingest higher levels of household dust than we do and dust from soft furnishings has very high concentrations of flame retardant chemicals.
