In a first of its kind study, scientists from the University of Texas have been looking at how exposure to high levels of air pollution can shorten our lives. Particulate Matter (PM) smaller than 2.5 microns can enter the lungs and leads to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, respiratory disease and cancer. The team from Texas examined data from 185 countries, to measure how disease linked to air pollution can affect us in the long term.

They found that exposure to outdoor and indoor air pollution can reduce life expectancy by as much as 2.5 years. To put this into context, poor diet can reduce life expectancy by 2.7 years, tobacco smoking by 1.8 years and cancer by 2.4 years. It’s clear from the results that air pollution is right up there as one of the leading causes of premature death.

Now we can’t always control the air pollution we’re exposed to outside of our homes but we can do something about the air inside. Austin air cleaners have been designed to remove 99.97% of all airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. They take care of dust, chemicals, allergens, dander, gases, mold, viruses and bacteria.
